Lead Testing for Children

Iowa has a new law that requires evidence of a blood lead test when kids enter school.  The requirement applies to children enrolled in public and private schools and those who are home schooled.

Lead tests in Howard County are ordered by medical providers during well child exams or drawn at WIC clinics in Howard County.  The new law only requires that a child have evidence of one blood lead test.

If your child is preparing for kindergarten and still needs a lead test, it can be ordered by your doctor to be drawn at Regional Health Services of Howard County/Hospital Services, or by an appointment scheduled at Community Health Services.  Most health insurance plans cover the cost of lead testing.  Funds are available to cover the cost of lead tests for children with no health insurance.

Please contact Karla Jensson, RN, Howard County Lead Coordinator, at 563.547.2989 with questions or to schedule a lead test at Community Health Services.
