Dr. Joan, as she prefers to be called, was born in Iowa City and raised in the Cresco area. Her idol growing up was her father, who influenced her desire to enter the field of medicine and her subsequent return to Cresco. Dr. Joan graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1979. She completed her internship and residency at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1984. She began her practice in Cresco in July of 1984. When questioned regarding her future plans, she indicated a strong desire to “stick around awhile”. Dr. Joan performs a wide variety of surgeries including abdominal, orthopedic, and gynecologic procedures. In her spare time, she plays the banjo and wood carves to keep her fingers limber. She also cares for her animal family, which includes two dogs, three horses, four cats, two tropical birds, and a tank full of fish. Her other interests are sports, fitness, and Native American Art.
