What's New
Do you have, or know of someone who has diabetes?
Being diagnosed with diabetes can cause concern and generate a lot of questions. Regional Health Services of Howard County has two diabetic educators, who with over 55 years of combined dietary and nursing experience, are here to help.
Sandy Hagen, Registered Dietitian, and Janis Spalla, Registered Nurse, recently achieved Certified Diabetes Educator status by successfully completing the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators examination. Candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be able to take the examination. Achieving certification status demonstrates to people with diabetes and employers that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality of care for people with diabetes.
Jan and Sandy work as a team to educate their clients about living with and managing diabetes. Clients receive individualized attention to work on a manageable diet, exercise and medication program in order to meet their specific needs. They also have organized a diabetic support group that meets periodically.
