Medicare: Preventive Services
Joan Stone, Director of Clinics
The rules and regulations for Medicare, or for any insurance company,
can be very confusing. Recently, at the Cresco and Lime Springs
Medical Clinics, we have had a number of patient questions regarding
what Medicare pays for preventive physical exams.
Medicare will cover a one-time preventive physical exam
within the first six months that you have Part B. The exam will include
a thorough review of your health, education and counseling about
the preventive services you need such as certain screenings and
shots, and referrals for other care. The “Welcome to Medicare” physical
exam is a great way to get up-to-date on important screenings and
shots and to talk with your health care provider about your family
history and how to stay healthy. You pay 20 percent of the Medicare-approved
amount after you meet the yearly Part B deductible ($131 for 2007).
Since this may be your first Medicare-covered service, you may
meet your entire Part B deductible at this visit. It would be most
helpful if you bring information on your medical history, your
family health history, and a list of prescription and non-prescription
drugs that you currently take, how often you take them, and why.
When you call to make an appointment, be sure to tell the
receptionist that you would like to schedule your “Welcome to Medicare” preventive
physical exam.
Medicare Part B does help cover the cost (coinsurance and/or deductibles
may apply, as well as meeting certain condition requirements) of
diabetic self-management training, diabetic supplies, health care
provider services, durable medical equipment, emergency room services,
eyeglasses (limited), flu shots, foot exams and treatment, glaucoma
tests, medical nutrition therapy services, outpatient mental health
care, occupational therapy, outpatient hospital services, outpatient
medical and surgical services and supplies, pap test, and pelvic
and breast exam.
